Why Supplier Diversity Matters

I have been sitting on this post for a few weeks waiting for the right inspiration to bring it to fruition. We were certified recently as a veteran-owned business. And, despite the fact this is true, along with being woman-owned, minority-owned and a host of other “diverse” categories,  as a small business, getting certified was a big deal. This tells the world that we have a diverse outlook, a new perspective, a new voice to bring to them. But, it wasn’t until my experience at #DaringWomenSEA yesterday and MJ Depalma’s presentation that I could see how incredibly useful an outside perspective could be.

It’s so easy to get trapped in the echo chamber where you live. Either you were born into it, you have spent decades creating it or it’s all in your head, hearing a challenge to your nearly habitual way of thinking can be the most pivotal thing towards your success…in life and business.

Since the conception of this business, it has been my mission to reinvent the landscape of promotional merchandise. No longer will I support commoditized product driven solely on price. I want to make the most out of your budget and selling cheap giveaways is not the way to do it. These items, the stress balls of the world, rarely make it past the exit door of the venue where you’ve spend hundreds of dollars to post your booth. How is that good use of your hard-earned dollars? I want my clients to know I’m on their side. That person who sells you stress balls year after year makes the same profit I do, but has made no effort to educate you on trends or evaluate impact. This is where my experience, my diversity comes in.

As a business owner, mom, wife, PTA board member, community advocate, former army nurse, part-Japanese…woman for all intents and purposes, I know what it is like to juggle many hats, stretch a dollar and attempt efficiency/efficacy/resourcefulness in everything I do. I bring this experience, and my love of people to my job…and to your orders. This is just one of the many reasons I call myself a Consultant Buying Partner. I’m not here to sell you on anything. I’m not here to fulfill your orders. I will be your partner in this. Whether you need your time back or want to make a big splash, I will find you the best options to make that happen. When you aren’t sure how to proceed, I will talk you through it.

Without an outside perspective, we would all be moving, like sheep, in one, uninteresting, direction…and, my luck, it would be the long way around…with steep hills.
